If you speak French, or if you are interested in privacy

October 13, 2008

If you speak French, some of my colleagues have set up a questionnaire to understand how privacy work on-line and on Social Network Sites (see Judith Donath for hair-splitting; danah boyd is partying after her defence). It is a scientific study about decency, so be warned: there are images that you will find shoking — nothing Goatse-like (if you don’t know what it is, you do not want to ask) but certainly not suitable for a common working environement.

If you are interested in Privacy, you might want to take a peek and like the idea, or spend some time in the related Facebook group.

Maybe a few personal comments about each.  Do not read further unless you have taken the questionnaire (or are planning not to): the first of the two phases, there are obvious issues with a multi-dimensional approach; even though the pictures have been carefully selected, you might disagree with the assumption behind ordering those that way — or even, might have issues with showing the first one.  The second experiment was an adaptation of a previous English-speaking equivalent; there might be some questions about what you should expect to find under ‘status’ and ‘information’ — but apart from trying to neutrally explain each, a difficult task, I guess the introduction they give is the best possible.
